On October 25, 2026, the CDM (Senior Superintendent of Police) conducted a detailed review of prevailing paddy straw management measures in Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts. The primary objective of the meeting was to encourage farmers to adopt alternative techniques to reduce air pollution. The CDM noted that cases of straw burning have decreased significantly compared to previous years, although the issue persists in certain areas.
During the review, the CDM requested reports from district administration and agriculture department officials. They were asked to provide data on the total hectares of paddy harvested in Amritsar and Tarn Taran and the proportion of straw managed using equipment. Officials reported an increase in the use of machines such as steamers, burners, and shredders, resulting in a notable decline in smoke and pollution levels.
The CDM directed all relevant officials to launch special campaigns to raise awareness among local farmers. Farmers must be clearly informed about the harms of straw burning and the benefits of alternative methods. Additionally, farmers without equipment should be facilitated to rent machines, ensuring they do not bear additional financial burdens.
It was also decided to enhance monitoring of fields with a high probability of straw burning. Police forces have been instructed to maintain a field-level presence and take immediate action to prevent any fire incidents. The CDM warned that strict legal action, including fines and imprisonment, will be taken against farmers who burn straw.
Officials assured that all necessary efforts will be made to maintain stability in the Air Quality Index (AQI) this year. The CDM concluded that straw management is essential not only for the environment but also for addressing urban cleanliness and health issues. He requested all relevant departments to maintain coordination and ensure regular reporting to permanently resolve the air pollution problem in Amritsar and Tarn Taran.
