On October 17, 2026 (Saturday), a significant urban policy meeting was held in New Delhi, where the Secretary of the Department of Urban Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), chaired the 10th meeting of the Committee for the Coordination of Urban Development Missions (CCUMC). The primary agenda of the meeting was to review the progress of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U 2.0) across the country and to determine the forward strategy. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the central ministry, representatives from state governments, and experts sent by the respective urban bodies.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Secretary reminded the attendees of the core objectives of PMAY-U 2.0, explaining that the scheme is designed to empower the poor and low-income groups by providing them with safe and permanent housing. He stated that construction work for lakhs of houses under the scheme has already commenced across the country, thereby boosting high unemployment and economic activities. However, challenges such as land availability, environmental clearances, and the distribution of financial assistance still persist in some regions, and the need for prompt action at the state level to resolve these issues was emphasized.
During the meeting, there was also an in-depth discussion on the implementation of Common Basic Services. The Secretary clarified that merely constructing houses is insufficient; the development of water supply, drainage systems, roads, electricity, and other public amenities must also be prioritized equally. He directed state governments to ensure compliance with the recommendations made in previous CCUMC meetings and to utilize the funds allocated for infrastructure development in urban areas in a timely and effective manner.
Notably, the meeting also called for accelerating the process of including new districts and municipalities in the scheme. The Secretary stated that MoHUA is providing all technical and administrative assistance to ensure that no urban body is deprived of the benefits of PMAY-U 2.0. At the end of the meeting, a joint statement was released, in which all stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation and coordination to address the challenges of urbanization. This 10th meeting proved to be a significant milestone in preparing the action plan for the next phase, which will help strengthen the path of urban development in the country.
