Central Finance Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman concluded her successful visit to Singapore on Thursday, taking several key steps to strengthen investment and financial cooperation. During the trip she met with Singapore’s senior financial officials, investors and business leaders, further solidifying the economic partnership between the two countries.
After a formal welcome ceremony with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Mrs. Sitharaman discussed the latest trends in the financial sector with the Chief Executive Officer of Singapore’s Ministry of Finance, Mr. Aaron Singh. She focused particularly on digital finance, blockchain technology and green financial products, aiming to provide new opportunities for investors in both India and Singapore.
In the main meeting, both countries agreed to create a new investment framework that would facilitate seamless entry for Indian companies into the Singapore market and encourage Singaporean investors to invest in India. Under this framework, the parties decided to establish a joint working group to simplify investment processes, reduce regulatory barriers and enhance tax incentives.
Mrs. Sitharaman also agreed to a strategic partnership with Singapore Exchange (SGX), Singapore’s leading stock exchange. Under this partnership, Indian stock exchanges will have the opportunity to list on new technology platforms with SGX, making it easier for Indian companies to reach global investors.
In addition, several tower‑to‑tower meetings were held with Singapore’s major banking institutions. In these meetings, both sides discussed the development of digital banking, fintech and insurtech in India’s banking sector. Mrs. Sitharaman noted that, given the rapid growth of fintech startups in India, there are great prospects for Singaporean investors in the Indian market.
During her stay in Singapore, Mrs. Sitharaman also discussed collaboration with Singapore’s leading universities and research institutions. She specifically proposed increasing cooperation in financial education and research programmes, so that students and researchers from both countries can benefit from new learning and research opportunities.
At the conclusion of the visit, Mrs. Sitharaman said, “This is an important step to deepen economic relations between India and Singapore. We look forward to new partnerships in investment, financial services and technological innovation between our two countries.” She added that Singapore is becoming a major destination for Indian investors and that India is increasingly becoming an attractive market for Singaporean investors.
The Singapore Ministry of Finance issued a press release after the visit, stating that this new phase of investment and financial cooperation between India and Singapore will prove beneficial for both countries. It also mentioned that the new partnerships will contribute to the economic development of both nations and increase competitiveness on a global level.
Under this visit, a new financial cooperation framework was established between India and Singapore, which will simplify investment processes, reduce regulatory barriers and increase tax incentives. This step will give a new direction to economic relations between the two countries while strengthening their competitiveness in the global financial market.
