Central Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda will lay the foundation stone for the ICMR's "Higher Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research Centre" in Kelang on 12 October.

A historic step is being taken in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, to give a new direction to health and medical research at high altitudes. Union Health Minister Shri Jitendra Prakash Nadda will lay the foundation stone of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) “High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research Centre” at a special ceremony to be held here on October 12. This project has been initiated with the objective of understanding the health needs of people residing in the country’s hilly regions, particularly the Himalayan areas, and providing them with effective medical facilities.

The primary objective of establishing this new research center is to conduct in-depth studies on various health issues occurring at high altitudes, such as altitude sickness, heart diseases, and respiratory disorders. Experts believe that there is a shortage of specialist doctors and research institutions in India’s hilly regions, often forcing local residents to descend from the high mountains or travel to distant cities for treatment. This center established by ICMR will play a crucial role in bridging this gap. The institution will not only assist in the treatment of patients but also raise awareness about public health among the people of the region.

In addition to Health Minister Shri Nadda, the state’s Chief Minister and other senior officials are expected to attend the foundation-laying ceremony. On this occasion, the Minister may also refer to the latest plans related to the expansion and improvement of the quality of health services in the high mountains. This center is considered a major achievement for Kullu and the surrounding villages, where access to medical facilities is limited due to harsh weather conditions.

According to officials of the Health Department, along with the construction of the center, arrangements will also be made for modern laboratories and diagnostic equipment. This facility will be beneficial not only for local citizens but also for security forces operating in the hilly regions and for tourists. The scientific study of the effects of high altitude on the human body will help in formulating specialized medical protocols for people living in such areas in the future. Thus, this ICMR initiative is set to open a new chapter for the health sector in Himachal Pradesh, paving the way for high-quality medical and research facilities at the local level.
