The Surat branch office of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) carried out a comprehensive raid and seizure operation on Wednesday against the manufacture and sale of induction motors lacking the Standard Mark. According to local administrative sources and BIS officials, this action was taken as part of a long-running investigation to verify whether the manufacture and distribution of branded induction motors strictly comply with BIS standards.
Surat, a major industrial hub, sees significant use of induction motors in infrastructure and residential settings, making their distribution and manufacturing a substantial commercial sector. Officials from the BIS Surat branch stated that the operation involved raids on several factories and warehouses where suspicious activities had been reported. The investigation revealed that some manufacturers were marketing induction motors without the BIS Standard Mark, posing safety risks to consumers and causing wastage of electrical energy.
During the operation, BIS officials conducted a detailed examination of the seized goods. Many of the seized induction motors lacked the BIS Standard Mark and did not bear the required safety certifications. Officials noted that the use of motors without the Standard Mark not only affects energy efficiency but can also cause fires or short circuits by placing excessive load on electrical systems. Therefore, this step was deemed essential to ensure consumer safety and the proper utilization of electrical resources.
The head of the BIS Surat branch stated that the value of the goods seized under this operation has been estimated at several lakhs of rupees. He clarified that the manufacture, distribution, or use of any induction motor without the Standard Mark is legally prohibited. Following the operation, legal proceedings have been initiated against the relevant manufacturers and importers. BIS officials warned that strict action, including fines and penalties, will be taken against any manufacturer or distributor that fails to comply with BIS standards.
It is also noteworthy that BIS has appealed to consumers to purchase only induction motors clearly marked with the BIS Standard Mark. The use of equipment without the Standard Mark bypasses sampling and certification processes, compromising both quality and safety. The BIS branch office in Surat and surrounding areas has planned further raid operations to eradicate such irregularities at the root and ensure strict adherence to the standards system. This measure will not only protect legitimate producers but also ensure consumers have access to safe and efficient equipment.
