The 19th Annual Session of the Joint Economic Commission (JEC) between India, Belgium, and Luxembourg was successfully concluded in the city of Luxembourg, aimed at promoting stability and cooperation in the global economic landscape. This significant bilateral meeting symbolized a firm resolve to elevate trade relations between the two nations to new heights and expand the scope of economic cooperation. During the meeting, senior economic officials and policymakers from both sides analyzed current challenges and engaged in serious discussions on future strategies.
During the session, special priority was given to cooperation in energy security, the green energy transition, and financial services. Representatives from India and the Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union (BLEU) agreed on the exchange of renewable energy technologies and joint research, strengthening the potential for positive exchange in the energy sector between the two countries. Additionally, detailed exchanges took place regarding digital payment systems, banking regulations, and savings plans in the finance sector, which is expected to provide clear direction for Indian investors and entrepreneurs seeking entry into the European market.
While reviewing trade statistics, both sides emphasized removing barriers to further expand bilateral trade. The Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union, considered a major trade hub of the European Union, serves as a crucial gateway for India. New avenues were explored during this session to promote exports of agriculture, pharmaceuticals, hardware, and chemical products. Furthermore, information was provided on investment promotion policies, highlighting the attractive environment for investment in India for Belgian and Luxembourgish industries.
Crucially, both countries also expressed agreement on cooperation in the digital economy and artificial intelligence (AI). Luxembourg, a leading center for digital banking and fintech, has shown readiness to connect with India’s rapidly growing digital market. The session was positive not only in terms of economic figures but also in strengthening human and cultural exchange. Both countries agreed to establish a monitoring mechanism to enhance cooperation in the fields of education, skill development, and science and technology.
Finally, the Joint Economic Commission directed the commencement of preparations for the next round of meetings, which will involve monitoring and implementing the strategies decided during this session. This 19th session reaffirms the commitment of the Ministry of External Affairs of India and the economic departments of the Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union to long-term and strategic partnership, which will prove to be a strong foundation for bilateral relations in the coming years.
