Special Campaign‑6: Boosting Food Production and Efficient Fertilizer Use in India
The Fertilizer Department has taken comprehensive and effective measures under “Special Campaign‑6” to promote food production and ensure efficient use of fertilizers among farmers in India. In the final phase of the campaign, the department and its subordinate public sector undertakings (PSUs) have jointly made significant progress. The main objective of the campaign is not only to ensure a continuous and adequate supply of fertilizers but also to encourage their proper use in farming, thereby improving crop yields and increasing farmers’ income.
During the campaign, public sector fertilizer companies increased their production capacities and made the distribution system more efficient. In particular, logistics and transportation arrangements were improved to ensure access to fertilizers in rural and remote areas. This made it easier for farmers to receive the necessary fertilizers on time, preventing any shortages during the growing season. The department ensured that fertilizer prices in the market remained controlled and reduced the additional costs incurred by intermediaries, so that farmers could benefit.
Moreover, under “Special Campaign‑6” an awareness campaign was launched among farmers. Through corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and technical workshops organized at the district and block levels, farmers were informed in detail about the correct fertilizer blends, fertilizer determination based on soil testing, and the benefits of organic farming. As a result, farmers began adopting science‑based farming instead of indiscriminate fertilizer use, which not only improved crop quality but also maintained soil fertility.
Public sector undertakings also utilized their technical capabilities under the campaign. They used smart farming technologies and digital platforms to connect directly with farmers, enabling immediate feedback and service improvement. Officials of the Fertilizer Ministry stated that as a result of Special Campaign‑6, a noticeable increase in fertilizer use efficiency has been observed in various states of the country.
In terms of future plans, the department announced that the next phase will focus on the development and promotion of the latest, environmentally friendly fertilizers, taking climate change into account. The success of Special Campaign‑6 has proven that the combined efforts of the government, public sector undertakings, and farmers can strengthen the country’s agricultural sector. This progress has not only yielded positive results for the current Kharif and Rabi crops but also sends a positive message regarding food security in the future.
