Mumbai City is taking the issue of traditional waste management, along with the growing problem of digital waste, or e-waste, very seriously. In this context, Mumbai City Limited (MCL) has presented a new and creative example of its social responsibility by staging a special street play under “Mission 6.0.” The primary objective of this mission was to spread awareness among citizens about e-waste and its proper management.
In modern life, the use of smartphones, laptops, televisions, and other electronic devices is increasing day by day. When the lifespan of these devices ends, they remain as harmful e-waste for the environment. MCL understood that messages reach people more effectively through folk arts than through technical data or informational posters. Therefore, the main foundation of this mission was a street play, aimed at bringing together people from various sections of the city, especially the youth and the elderly, to connect them with this environmental issue.
In the street play, artists presented the environmental pollution caused by e-waste, the risks of water and soil contamination, and the process of proper disposal or recycling through humorous and impactful dialogues. The stage depicted how even a small phone or battery, if discarded incorrectly, can cause significant environmental damage. Citizens were also informed that they can safely donate or dispose of their old electronic devices through authorized centers or the waste collection services promoted by MCL.
The “6.0” in the title of “Mission 6.0” indicates the sixth phase or version of the mission, which is part of MCL’s continuous efforts in the city’s cleanliness and sanitation campaigns. The program was well received by local citizens, schoolchildren, and social workers. During the performance, direct interaction and a question-and-answer session were organized with the audience, giving them an opportunity to share their doubts.
MCL spokespersons stated on this occasion that as the city develops, its sanitation challenges are also increasing. E-waste has emerged as a bigger problem than plastic or paper waste in homes and offices. Therefore, instead of limiting itself to waste collection, MCL is emphasizing prevention and proper disposal. This street play mission is a key component aimed at turning the dream of “Beautiful Mumbai” and “Clean Mumbai” into reality.
Through this initiative, MCL has demonstrated that administrative bodies can bring about social change by using folk arts. In the future, several such programs will be organized under “Mission 6.0,” focusing on raising awareness about issues such as a plastic-free Mumbai, water conservation, and other environmental concerns. Thus, MCL is taking steps to actively involve citizens in the sanitation campaign, so that Mumbai becomes not only an economically developed city but also a healthy and green habitat.
