Kanda Express will arrive in Kolkata on 24 September carrying onions from the government’s secure reserve.

In recent months, onion prices have fluctuated continuously across various parts of India. Particularly in the southeastern region, prices surged due to increased demand and reduced supply, prompting the government to decide to augment onion supply from its national stock. In this direction, the Kanda Express, a major freight train of Eastern Railway, has been scheduled to reach Kolkata on 24 September.

The objective of delivering onions from the secure reserve is to strengthen the regional supply chain and maintain affordable rates for consumers. This initiative has been carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, which has indicated that the reserve holds a sufficient quantity of onions that can be released into the market in a timely manner. The onions to be dispatched on the track will be packed in special temperature‑controlled containers to preserve quality during transit.

Experts believe that such timely stock releases can prevent sudden price spikes in onions and give farmers hope of receiving fair prices for their harvest. Additionally, this step is considered important for increasing transparency in the supply chain and reducing dependence on unnecessary imports. Government officials are confident that the Kanda Express delivery will improve onion supply in Kolkata's market and provide economic relief to consumers.
