In the global political landscape, highlighting India’s diplomatic resolve and the shared recognition of parliamentary democratic values, Honorable Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla delivered a significant address at the recently held 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum 2026. This forum is not only a dedicated platform for dialogue among parliamentarians of BRICS countries but is also viewed as a sign of solidarity in confronting global challenges.
In his address, Speaker Birla emphasized the expansion of the BRICS group and its growing economic and political influence. He noted that BRICS is no longer merely an economic bloc; it has become a pivotal pillar as it moves toward an alternative global governance structure. His main message was that parliaments can play a highly effective role in amplifying the voice of the developing world on global stages.
Speaker Birla particularly stressed the importance of multilateralism. He warned that in an era of bilateral alliances and regional tensions, safeguarding the legitimacy of the United Nations and other international institutions is essential. He urged the parliaments of BRICS countries to jointly advance proposals that protect the interests of the Global South (developing countries) and secure equal rights for these countries in global decision‑making.
During the dialogue, Speaker Birla appealed to uphold mutual respect, adherence to international law, and the principles of peaceful coexistence. He stated that dialogue is the sole path to resolving disputes, not the use of force. In this context, he highlighted the need to increase cooperation on various regional and global issues within BRICS, including climate change, energy security, and the digital economy.
Citing the strong foundation of India’s parliamentary democracy, he said that democracy is the best means to institutionalize the will of the people. The BRICS Parliamentary Forum demonstrates that countries with different political systems can work together toward common consensus and development.
Finally, Shri Om Birla called upon all BRICS parliamentarians to incorporate the voice of the people in their respective countries into global policy making. He expressed hope that by the time the 13th forum is held next year, the BRICS Parliamentary Forum will emerge as an even stronger and more influential institution. This meeting could prove a decisive turning point for the political and economic landscape of 2026, where India is focused on strengthening its leadership role.
