CAQM reviews Paddy Stubble Management Measures in Firozpur and Faridkot; stresses Timely Availability of CRM Machinery and Farmer Facilitation

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Consumer Affairs has taken a significant step to maintain air quality in the National Capital Region of Delhi and control pollution generated during agricultural activities. The Ministry has constituted a special committee to review measures for the management of crop residues (stubble) left after the harvest of kharif paddy in the districts of Firozpur and Faridkot. The objective of this initiative is to ensure the timely availability of Crop Residue Management (CRM) machinery for farmers and provide them with all possible facilities, enabling them to farm in a climate-friendly manner in their fields.

According to the committee, the current practice of farmers burning paddy straw in fields is a major cause of air pollution. To address this issue, the government has directed that financial assistance be provided to farmers for the purchase and maintenance of CRM machinery. Additionally, farmers will be provided with the necessary technical knowledge and training for the use of the machinery. The committee also recommended that in areas with limited machinery availability, a pick-and-drop model be adopted to ensure the availability of machines, so that no farmer is left without access to the equipment.

Furthermore, it has been advised to use extensive publicity and awareness campaigns to inform farmers about the benefits associated with the use of CRM machinery. The committee also noted that using paddy straw as fertilizer, instead of burning it, improves soil fertility and benefits future crops. Therefore, it is essential to explain to farmers that stubble management is necessary not only for reducing air pollution but also for sustainable agriculture.

The committee also suggested that state governments and local administrations should make coordinated efforts to ensure the availability of CRM machinery. To this end, agreements can be made with machinery manufacturers and dealers to make the equipment available to farmers at reduced prices. In addition, technical support will be provided for the maintenance and repair of the machinery to ensure that farmers face no technical barriers in its use.

This initiative will not only help reduce air pollution but also increase farmers' income, as utilizing paddy straw as a resource will provide them with an additional source of revenue. The active participation and awareness of farmers are crucial for the success of this government policy. In the coming days, the government may adopt further measures to make this initiative more effective, so that agriculture-related pollution can be reduced and air quality improved.
